Marko Farion is a Ukrainian bandura player and composer. The bandura, a 55 stringed instrument that comes from a centuries old minstrel tradition, is known as Ukraine's national instrument. These minstrel-bards were called kobzars, and later, as the instrument developed, bandurists. Farion is also a classically trained bass soloist and he is a widely sought after bandura instructor. He received bandura and vocal training from the late Hryhory Kytasty, the bandura's pre-eminent composer. He also studied music and voice at Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Institute of Music. His accomplishments include performances and recordings with the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus, the Detroit Concert Choir, the Millennium Choir, and the Detroit Opera Chorus. He has traveled the globe with his bandura giving performances and conducting various workshops and music camps for bandura players. His music has been featured on PBS and the documentary "Baba Babee Skazala" (2018)

This bootleg recording of "Song of Sirko" (Oj Choho ty Dube) was recorded during the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus' concert at Harvard University's Sanders Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts on May 25, 1983. . This concert was part of conductor and musical director Hryhory Kytasty's last performances and appearances, since he fell ill with cancer in January of 1984 and passed away on April 6, 1984. Soloist Marko Farion was Hryhory Kytasty's student and was 21 years old at the time of this solo.

This brings back many memories for me. A lady, now deceased, from my parish went with you. She was frantic because her visa still had not shown up the day before your group was leaving. She was a spry, but tiny older lady, Pani Jackiw and trying to pack 2 bags that probably each weighted more she did. She called my Mother for help late that night. We came over early the next morning to help her and keep her calm. Luckily, the passport and visa showed up just in time for her ride. The "big" car was stuffed and I think she ended up on someones lap. Some of the faces I remember from that car I see among those in the back row. We had to tie the trunk down with rope to get her luggage in. We all prayed that your tour would go we'll because it was still an uncertain time. My then teenage cousin and her parents were at that concert. Two months later, on August 24th, I was tearfully sing the National Anthem for the opening ceremony of a Ukrainian Music Festival at Dibrova and a month later I was singing "Oi u Luzi" along with a plane load of people after the pilot announced that we had just crossed out of Hungarian airspace. We never expected Ukraine to be free. We should have expected that Russia would never let us stay free
